BSc Product Design (Industrial)
About this course
Industrial product design sits at the boundary of creativity and engineering, concerned with the conception, development, and realisation of physical and digital products that meet human needs and function effectively in the real world. It draws on user research, industrial design principles, engineering knowledge, materials science, manufacturing processes, and digital design tools to take ideas from initial concept through to production-ready specifications. The field has expanded considerably with the rise of digital products, and contemporary product designers often work across physical and digital domains. At the University of Leeds, this four-year full-time Product Design (Industrial) degree brings creativity and technical thinking together, developing your understanding of how ideas become real products. You will learn to design both physical and digital products, from consumer goods and electronics to software and applications, developing a strong command of the full design process from user insight and concept creation through to detailed design and production. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you substantial professional experience in product design or related engineering and design contexts before you complete your degree. Product design graduates from Leeds work across a wide range of industries. Consumer electronics, automotive design, medical device design, furniture, packaging, household goods, sports equipment, and digital product design are all common destinations. Roles in design consultancies, in-house design teams, and manufacturing companies are well-established pathways. The combination of user understanding, technical design knowledge, and manufacturing awareness is also valued in adjacent fields such as UX design, innovation management, and product strategy. Postgraduate study in product design, design innovation, human factors, or engineering design is an option for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
