BA Graphic and Communication Design
About this course
Graphic and communication design is the practice of giving visual form to ideas, information, and messages in ways that are clear, purposeful, and aesthetically considered. It is a discipline that has always shaped how people encounter the world, from the design of books and posters to the interfaces of digital products and the visual language of global brands. In a media environment where attention is fragmented and images multiply at an extraordinary rate, the ability to design communications that are genuinely effective and not merely conspicuous is more valuable than ever. At the University of Leeds this three-year programme develops both your practical skills and your critical understanding of design as a cultural and communicative practice. You will work across a range of media and contexts, developing a visual intelligence that can adapt to different audiences, purposes, and platforms. The course includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as work placement experience, so your four years of study include significant professional and international dimensions. You will learn to think as a designer and as a communicator, understanding not just how to make things look compelling but why certain visual decisions work and others do not, and what the relationship is between design, meaning, and the societies in which design operates. Graduates from graphic and communication design programmes work as graphic designers, brand designers, art directors, UX and UI designers, typographers, motion designers, and design researchers across a wide range of industries, including advertising, publishing, technology, retail, public services, and the cultural sector. The professional and placement experience built into this course gives you a portfolio and a network before you graduate. Further study at postgraduate level in design, visual communication, or related fields is also an option for those who wish to specialise or move into design research.
