BA Fashion Design: Print
About this course
Fashion design with a specialism in print is concerned with the creation of patterned, printed and surface-designed textiles for fashion. It is a discipline that combines drawing and fine art skills with technical knowledge of textile construction, dyeing, printing processes and digital design tools. Print is one of the most distinctive elements of a fashion collection, and designers who specialise in it need both a confident visual imagination and a thorough understanding of how patterns and surfaces work across garments and collections. At the University of the Arts, London, this four-year full-time degree is part of the Fashion programme at one of the world's most prestigious fashion education institutions, which has produced some of the most significant designers in contemporary fashion. You will develop your print practice within the broader context of fashion design, studying textile design, colour theory, surface decoration, garment construction and the fashion industry's creative and commercial processes. The programme has a dynamic studio culture, and you will be expected to push your practice creatively while also developing the technical proficiency and professional discipline that the industry demands. A sandwich year placement and a work placement are built into the programme, giving you professional experience in fashion design, textile studios or related creative businesses. You will develop a portfolio of print and fashion design work that reflects your creative vision and technical capability, and you will engage with the professional culture, critical discourse, and contemporary debates of the fashion world. Graduates from UAL's fashion programmes move into careers in fashion design, textile and print design, fashion styling, trend forecasting, creative direction, fashion journalism, buying and merchandising, and a wide range of roles in the international fashion industry. The institution's reputation and its connections with the industry are significant assets in a competitive and global field.
