BEng Mechanical Engineering
About this course
Mechanical Engineering is the broadest of the engineering disciplines, concerned with anything that moves, produces force, transforms energy, or involves the physical properties of materials. Aircraft engines, wind turbines, manufacturing robots, medical implants, and the structural components of buildings all fall within its scope. Mechanical engineers apply the principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and materials science to design, analyse, and improve physical systems, combining mathematical rigour with practical creativity and judgement. At Edinburgh Napier University, this five-year full-time programme provides an extended and thorough education in mechanical engineering, with a year abroad built into the structure. The additional year compared to standard three or four-year programmes allows the curriculum to develop each area of the discipline more completely and gives you time to pursue specialist interests in greater depth. You will study the core engineering sciences alongside design, manufacturing, control systems, materials selection, and computer-aided engineering tools. The year abroad offers the opportunity to study engineering at a partner institution in another country, which broadens your perspective on how engineering is practised in different industrial and regulatory environments and develops the international awareness that many engineering employers now expect. Edinburgh Napier is a teaching-focused university with strong connections to Scottish industry, and the programme benefits from this engagement with regional and national engineering practice. You will develop both the technical knowledge and the professional judgement that the engineering profession requires. Graduates pursue careers in energy, aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, construction, offshore engineering, and consultancy. Many progress to chartered engineer status with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Some go on to postgraduate study or research in specialist areas. The five-year programme with year abroad provides a particularly well-developed foundation for a professional engineering career.
