MA Italian and Mathematics
About this course
Italian and Mathematics is a combination that might seem counterintuitive at first, but it reflects the genuine breadth of intellectual life available at a research university, where disciplines do not have to be adjacent to be studied together productively. Italian gives you access to one of the world's great literary, artistic, and intellectual traditions, from Dante and Machiavelli through the Renaissance and Risorgimento to the modern novel and contemporary culture, alongside the language competence to engage with Italian society, business, and academia directly. Mathematics develops the capacity for rigorous abstract reasoning, formal proof, and quantitative analysis that is at the foundation of the modern sciences and of the most demanding professional careers. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year MA (Hons) programme includes a year abroad, which gives you the opportunity to spend extended time in Italy, building your linguistic fluency and cultural immersion to a level that classroom study cannot achieve. You will develop your Italian to a high level of proficiency while also studying specialist topics in Italian literature, culture, history, politics, and film. On the mathematics side, you will work through pure and applied mathematics, developing the technical depth and abstraction skills that the discipline requires. St Andrews is a leading research university in both subjects, and the programme draws on that strength. The combination produces a graduate with an unusual profile: analytical precision in mathematics and rich humanistic and linguistic depth in Italian. Both skillsets are rare individually; together they are distinctive. Graduates move into careers in finance and quantitative analysis, data science, technology, education, publishing, cultural institutions, and international business. Some pursue academic careers in mathematics or Italian studies, and others enter translation, interpreting, journalism, or diplomacy. The year abroad and the language competence are significant professional assets in any international context.
