Pure mathematics is the study of mathematical structures for their own sake, guided by the internal logic and beauty of the discipline rather than immediate application. It is a subject that demands and develops the highest levels of abstract reasoning, precision of thought, and creative intellectual engagement, and it has historically proved to be both profoundly satisfying as a pursuit and surprisingly useful when the world eventually catches up with ideas that seemed purely theoretical. At Imperial College, this three-year full-time programme is designed for students who wish to engage with mathematics at the deepest level.
