MA Portuguese/Mathematics
About this course
Portuguese and mathematics is an unusual combination that brings together two profoundly different but equally demanding disciplines: a language with global reach and deep cultural richness on one hand, and the abstract structures and rigorous reasoning of mathematics on the other. Portuguese is spoken by around 260 million people across Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde and numerous other countries, making it one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and a language of enormous commercial, diplomatic and cultural significance. Mathematics provides the universal language of pattern, structure and proof, underlying science, engineering, economics and computing. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year degree allows you to develop genuine depth in both disciplines over a programme that includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities. The flexibility of Honours year choices means you can shape the mathematical content toward your interests, whether pure mathematics, statistics, applied mathematics or some combination. The Portuguese strand develops your linguistic competence to an advanced level, alongside engagement with the cultures, histories and contemporary societies of the Portuguese-speaking world. Glasgow's ambassador scheme, mentioned in the course information, gives students the chance to spend time in schools, experiencing teaching directly and developing key workplace skills, which is particularly relevant for those considering careers in education. The combination is particularly valuable for those interested in quantitative roles in international contexts, academic research spanning languages and formal disciplines, or careers that require both rigorous analytical thinking and the ability to communicate across cultural and linguistic boundaries. Graduates go on to careers in data science, finance, technology, mathematical modelling, language services, international business, research and education. The sandwich year and placements give professional experience that complements the academic depth of the degree. Further study in mathematics, linguistics, translation, education or related disciplines is also a natural route.
