BA Fine Art: Sculpture
About this course
Sculpture as a fine art practice sits at one of the most expansive and contested edges of contemporary art. Unlike disciplines defined by a single medium, sculpture encompasses physical objects and spatial installations, performance and time-based work, digital fabrication, found material, casting and carving, and works that exist in public space. It asks you to think in three dimensions, to consider the relationship between an object and the space it inhabits, and to engage with the long history of sculptural practice while developing a contemporary voice that is distinctly your own. At the University of the Arts London you will study this three-year full-time programme at an institution that is one of the world's leading centres for art and design education. You will develop your sculptural practice through sustained making, critical reflection, and engagement with the ideas that shape contemporary art. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, both of which give you experience outside the studio, whether in galleries, artist studios, fabrication workshops, or other professional contexts. The University of the Arts context means you have access to exceptional resources, peer networks across disciplines, and the wider London art world, which is one of the most dynamic anywhere. Graduates of fine art sculpture pursue careers as practising artists, often building their practice alongside other work in the arts. Many move into roles in arts education, community arts, gallery and museum work, arts administration, set and production design, public art commissioning, and artist studios and residencies. The fabrication skills developed in a sculpture programme are also valued in industries ranging from architecture and theatre to product design and film. Postgraduate study, including MFA programmes, is a common route for artists who wish to develop their practice further or to move into teaching in higher education.
