About this course
Fine art at degree level is the sustained, critical, and experimental development of an artistic practice. It asks you to engage seriously with ideas, with materials, and with the history and theory of art, developing a body of work that reflects not only technical competence but genuine conceptual and creative thinking. Contemporary fine art is genuinely open in its forms and ambitions, encompassing painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, installation, photography, video, performance, and digital practices, and one of the important tasks of a fine art education is to help you find the media and approaches that most powerfully serve your own developing concerns as an artist. At Loughborough University, this three-year full-time programme offers a vibrant, creative, and critical environment that explores the possibilities of contemporary fine art practice and theory, as the current description accurately reflects. Loughborough has strong studio facilities and a culture that takes both the practical and intellectual dimensions of art-making seriously. You will develop your practice through sustained studio work alongside critical and theoretical study, engaging with the history of modern and contemporary art, with art theory and criticism, and with the work of practising artists, curators, and writers who inform and challenge your thinking. The studio critique is a central pedagogical form: you will regularly present and discuss your work with tutors and peers, developing the professional self-reflection and critical articulation that are essential for a career in art. Research and contextual studies are integrated throughout the programme, and Loughborough's connections with the design and creative industries more broadly create opportunities for engagement with professional contexts beyond the fine art world alone. Graduates from fine art programmes pursue careers as practising artists, often combined with related work in arts education, curating, writing, community arts, and the creative industries. Teaching in schools and further education, gallery and museum work, arts administration, and roles in design and creative media are common graduate paths. Postgraduate study in fine art practice or theory is a well-established route for those who wish to develop their practice to a higher level or enter academic teaching.
