BA Fine Art
About this course
Fine Art is the practice of making work that engages seriously with ideas, materials, and the world. It is a discipline rooted in visual and conceptual thinking, asking you to develop your own artistic voice while situating your practice within the broader history and theory of contemporary art. Unlike more applied creative subjects, Fine Art is concerned with the open-ended investigation of what images, objects, and experiences can mean and do, and it demands both intellectual rigour and a willingness to experiment and take risks. At the University of Edinburgh, one of the UK's leading research institutions, you will study Fine Art over four years in full-time mode. Edinburgh's position in Scotland means you will engage with a distinctive cultural context while also connecting to an international art scene. You will work across a range of media and approaches, developing your technical skills alongside a critical and theoretical understanding of art history and contemporary practice. Studio work sits alongside seminars, critiques, and written work, training you to articulate your ideas verbally and in writing as well as visually. The typical entry tariff of 168 points reflects the competitive nature of the programme. Fine Art is a discipline that cultivates a particularly powerful set of transferable skills: independent thinking, the ability to develop and communicate complex ideas, resilience in the face of ambiguity, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively. Graduates go on to pursue careers as practising artists, working in galleries, residencies, and commissions. Many also move into roles in arts administration, curation, arts education, and cultural policy. Others find that the creative and critical thinking they develop transfers well into design, advertising, publishing, and the wider creative industries. Postgraduate study in Fine Art, Art History, or Curating is a natural next step for those who want to deepen their practice or move into academic research.
