About this course

Finance and management is a combination that reflects a practical truth: organisations need people who can think both about the numbers and about the people and systems behind them. Finance develops the quantitative and analytical skills to evaluate investments, read financial statements, understand risk, and contribute to capital allocation decisions. Management develops the qualitative, interpersonal, and strategic skills needed to lead teams, understand organisations, and contribute to commercial direction. Together they develop a genuinely versatile graduate who can move between technical financial work and broader management responsibilities. At the University of Essex, this three-year full-time degree is designed to give you career flexibility after graduation, developing both the quantitative skills appropriate for the finance sector and the qualitative and discursive skills appropriate for management and leadership. You will be equipped to lead a finance team within an organisation, pursue a career as a financial analyst, or use your business knowledge across any area of management. In the third year you have the option to undertake a paid work placement that develops your professional skills and enhances your employment prospects. A typical entry tariff of 104 points applies. You will study corporate finance, financial accounting, investment analysis, business strategy, organisational behaviour, and the research and analytical methods used in both fields. The combination develops your ability to think clearly about financial data and commercial situations and to communicate your analysis persuasively to different audiences. Graduates go on to careers in financial management, corporate banking, investment analysis, management consultancy, general management, accounting, and business strategy across many sectors. The placement option in the third year provides direct professional experience that employers value. Postgraduate study in finance, management, or accounting is another route for those seeking specialisation or senior roles.
