About this course

Diagnostic radiography is the healthcare profession responsible for producing the medical images on which clinical diagnosis and treatment depend. Radiographers work at the heart of modern medicine, using X-ray, CT, MRI, fluoroscopy and other imaging technologies to produce images that allow clinicians to identify fractures, tumours, organ abnormalities, vascular conditions and a broad range of pathologies. The role requires both technical expertise in operating sophisticated imaging equipment and the patient-centred skills needed to care for people who are often anxious or in pain. At Brighton, this three-year full-time programme prepares you for registration as a diagnostic radiographer with the Health and Care Professions Council. You will develop a thorough understanding of radiographic principles, anatomy and pathology, physics of imaging, radiation protection and the clinical protocols that govern safe and effective practice. Clinical placements are central to the programme, taking you into hospital imaging departments where you work with real patients under the supervision of experienced radiographers. The combination of academic study and clinical practice across the three years ensures that you graduate as a clinically competent professional. Brighton's programme benefits from connections to NHS trusts in the South East, giving you access to a range of clinical environments and imaging specialisms. You will encounter different patient populations and clinical contexts across your placements, building adaptability alongside technical proficiency. On graduating and achieving HCPC registration, you are qualified to work in NHS imaging departments, private hospitals and specialist imaging centres. Many radiographers go on to develop expertise in specific modalities such as MRI, CT, breast imaging or interventional radiology. Advanced practice, specialist roles and postgraduate study are well-supported longer-term career directions.
