BSc Diagnostic Radiography
About this course
Diagnostic radiography is the clinical profession responsible for producing medical images that allow clinicians to identify disease, injury, and anatomical abnormalities. Radiographers work with a range of imaging technologies, including plain radiography, fluoroscopy, computed tomography, and increasingly other modalities, to examine body systems and organs in ways that directly support diagnosis and patient management. It is a profession that combines advanced technical expertise with patient-facing clinical care, requiring both precision in image production and sensitivity in dealing with patients who may be anxious or unwell. At Cumbria this three-year full-time degree leads to eligibility to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as a diagnostic radiographer, which is the required step to practise professionally in the UK. You will develop a thorough theoretical understanding of anatomy and physiology, radiation physics, radiographic technique, pathology, and the principles of radiation protection, alongside the practical and clinical skills needed to work competently in a real imaging department. Clinical placements form a central part of the degree, placing you in NHS settings where you work under supervision with real patients and develop your professional competence in a supported environment. The teaching is delivered by staff with active industry experience, and the facilities at Cumbria include contemporary digital imaging equipment that allows you to develop your skills in an environment that reflects current clinical practice. Graduates register with the HCPC and work as diagnostic radiographers in NHS hospitals and independent sector imaging services. The profession offers a structured career progression from newly qualified radiographer through to advanced and consultant practitioner roles. Many radiographers go on to specialist practice in particular imaging modalities, or to postgraduate study and academic or research careers in medical imaging.
