About this course
Diagnostic radiography is the clinical profession responsible for producing the medical images that underpin diagnosis and treatment across almost every area of medicine. Radiographers use X-ray, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy to create images of bones, organs, and tissues, working closely with radiologists and clinical teams to ensure that images are of the quality needed to guide clinical decisions. As the University of Leeds describes it, the field combines science, technology, and patient care at the forefront of emerging diagnostic and treatment technology, making it one of the most technically dynamic healthcare professions. Leeds' three-year full-time Diagnostic Radiography degree carries a typical entry tariff of 152 points and includes a year abroad option. You will study radiographic anatomy, physics and radiation science, clinical pathology, image production and evaluation, and the professional and ethical dimensions of radiographic practice. A significant proportion of your time is spent in clinical placements within the NHS, where you will develop your practical skills in real imaging departments under the supervision of registered radiographers. These placements are central to your preparation for professional registration and give you direct experience of working with patients across a range of clinical settings. Registering with the Health and Care Professions Council upon graduation allows you to practise as a diagnostic radiographer within the NHS, independent healthcare, and internationally. Many radiographers go on to develop specialist skills in areas such as computed tomography, MRI, mammography, or interventional procedures. Others move into roles in radiographic education, research, management, or advanced practice, including reporting radiographers who interpret images and contribute directly to diagnostic decisions. Postgraduate study is increasingly common in this profession, and the clinical and scientific rigour of an accredited degree provides a strong foundation for advanced training.
