About this course

Diagnostic radiography is the clinical profession responsible for producing the medical images that underpin diagnosis across the full range of healthcare settings. Radiographers work with X-ray, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound and other imaging technologies, producing the images that allow clinicians to identify fractures, tumours, vascular conditions, organ abnormalities and a wide range of other pathologies. The role requires both technical mastery of complex imaging equipment and the ability to care for patients, many of whom are anxious, unwell or in pain, with professionalism and compassion. At London South Bank University, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing an extended entry route that builds the scientific and academic foundations needed for degree-level study in a health profession. LSBU's diagnostic radiography programme is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council and accredited by the Society and College of Radiographers, which are the professional and regulatory bodies that govern the field. Across the programme you will develop a thorough understanding of radiographic principles, anatomy, pathology, radiation protection and the physics of imaging systems, alongside the clinical skills required to work safely and effectively with patients in a range of imaging modalities. Clinical placements are central to your training, taking you into hospital imaging departments where you develop competence under the supervision of experienced radiographers. The combination of academic study and clinical practice prepares you for the realities of the profession. On graduating with HCPC registration, you are qualified to work as a diagnostic radiographer in NHS hospital trusts, private hospitals and imaging centres. Many radiographers develop specialist interests in areas such as MRI, CT, nuclear medicine or breast imaging, and sonography and advanced practice roles offer further career development.
