MEng Construction Engineering, Innovation and Leadership
About this course
Construction engineering, innovation, and leadership addresses one of the most complex and consequential challenges of the modern world: how to design, build, and manage the built environment in ways that are technically excellent, economically viable, and sustainable over the long term. Traditional civil and construction engineering is no longer enough on its own. The sector faces mounting pressure to reduce carbon emissions, adopt new materials and digital technologies, and manage increasingly complex supply chains. This programme at University College London takes those challenges seriously, combining rigorous engineering science with a sustained focus on innovation and the leadership skills needed to drive change in large organisations. Over four years of full-time study, you will develop a grounding in the principles of structural and construction engineering alongside a critical engagement with how the industry is changing. You will study project management, procurement, and the economics of construction, as well as the digital tools transforming the sector, including building information modelling and data-driven design. The leadership dimension of the programme distinguishes it from a standard engineering degree: you will examine how engineering projects are governed, how teams are led, and how innovation is introduced into an industry that is often resistant to change. UCL's location in London gives you access to one of the world's great construction markets, with major infrastructure and development projects visible and accessible throughout the city. The university's connections with industry are strong, and the programme is designed to develop graduates who can take on significant responsibility early in their careers. Graduates from this programme go on to roles in construction management, project delivery, infrastructure development, engineering consultancy, and built environment policy. The leadership and innovation emphasis opens doors in senior management and strategic roles across the sector, and the degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study and for chartered membership of the relevant professional engineering and construction institutions.
