MEng Structural Engineering with Architecture
About this course
Structural engineering with architecture is one of the most meaningful integrations in the built environment professions, bringing together the creative and spatial thinking of architecture with the technical rigour of structural engineering. Every building stands because structural principles are working behind the design: loads are transferred to the ground, materials behave within their limits and connections between elements are detailed to resist the forces that wind, gravity and human use impose. When structural engineers and architects understand each other's discipline deeply, the results are more beautiful, more durable and more efficient than when the two professions work at arm's length. At the University of Dundee, this five-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and focuses on the conceptualisation, design, analysis, construction and maintenance of infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on the architectural dimension of structural engineering. You will develop expertise in structural analysis, materials, geotechnics, dynamics, construction technology and project management alongside architectural history, theory, design principles and the visual and spatial aspects of building. The year abroad gives you exposure to structural and architectural practice in a different built environment context, broadening your professional perspective. Dundee's research and teaching in engineering and design provide an excellent foundation for this demanding and distinctive combination. Graduates of structural engineering with architecture programmes work in consulting engineering practices, architectural firms, construction companies, government infrastructure bodies and specialist design companies. The combination of structural engineering rigour and architectural understanding is valued in roles that require both technical credibility and design sensitivity. Many graduates work towards chartered engineer status with the Institution of Structural Engineers, and some also engage with architectural professional development. Further study at master's level in structural engineering, civil engineering or architectural technology is available for those who want to advance their specialism.
