About this course
Adult nursing is one of the most demanding and rewarding professions in the health and care sector, requiring a combination of scientific knowledge, clinical judgement, and the human qualities of empathy, patience, and clear communication. Nurses working with adult patients across hospital wards, community settings, and specialist units are the largest single group in the NHS, and the skills they develop are transferable across a wide range of healthcare environments in the UK and internationally. At Southampton Solent University, this three-year, full-time degree prepares you for registration as an adult nurse through a programme that integrates academic study with substantial practical experience. Working in partnership with NHS Trusts in the region, you will spend a significant portion of your time in clinical placements, applying what you learn in lectures and seminars to real patient care. You will develop competence in assessment, care planning, medication management, and the communication skills that are central to safe and compassionate nursing practice. The academic content covers anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, evidence-based practice, and the ethical and legal frameworks within which nurses operate. Nursing education at this level is built around the standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and successful completion of the degree leads to eligibility to register as a qualified nurse. You will be supported throughout by academic staff and clinical mentors who bring practical experience to the teaching they provide. The programme at Solent is designed to produce nurses who are confident in both technical skills and person-centred care, ready to take on the responsibilities of a qualified practitioner from the point of graduation.
