BSc Nursing Studies (Registered Nurse Adult Nursing)
About this course
Adult nursing is one of the most directly meaningful professions in healthcare, providing care to people across a wide range of conditions, settings, and stages of life. Registered nurses assess patients' needs, plan and deliver care, administer treatments, monitor progress, and support patients and their families through illness and recovery. The role demands clinical knowledge and practical skill, but equally requires empathy, communication, resilience, and the capacity to make sound decisions under pressure. Nursing is regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and qualifying requires completion of an approved programme of study. At Aston University, this three-year full-time degree leads to registration as an adult nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The programme is shaped by the principles of the NHS Constitution, reflecting the values of compassion, dignity, and respect for patients that underpin professional nursing practice. You will study anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, and the evidence base for nursing interventions, gaining the clinical knowledge needed to care for adults across medical, surgical, and community settings. Substantial practice hours in real clinical placements are integrated throughout the programme, ensuring that your academic learning is continuously grounded in the realities of nursing care. You will develop clinical competence alongside the professional judgment and ethical reasoning that nursing requires. The degree qualification and NMC registration open the door to nursing practice across the full range of NHS and independent healthcare settings, including acute hospitals, community nursing, care homes, mental health liaison, and specialist services. Many graduates also develop their careers through specialist pathways, advanced clinical roles, nurse prescribing, or management. Postgraduate study including Master's-level nursing practice and research is available for those who want to deepen their expertise or move into leadership, education, or advanced practice.
