About this course

Adult nursing is a profession built on the care and support of people through illness, recovery, long-term conditions, and the transitions of adult life. Nurses are the largest professional group in the health service, and their work requires a unique combination of clinical knowledge and technical skill with the communication, empathy, and ethical judgement that human care demands. Adult nurses work across settings from hospital wards and emergency departments to community clinics, GP practices, care homes, and patients' own homes, meaning that versatility and the ability to build relationships quickly are central to professional identity. At the University of Sunderland this three-year full-time programme is taught by an enthusiastic team of skilled nursing professionals and gives you regular, structured contact with patients and carers from early in the course. You will develop your clinical knowledge and practical skills in parallel, moving between academic study and practice placements throughout the degree. You will learn to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care, developing the clinical reasoning and decision-making abilities that safe and effective nursing requires. The programme is designed so that on graduation you are eligible to register as an adult nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Qualifying as a registered nurse opens a wide range of career paths within the NHS and private healthcare. Many graduates begin in acute hospital settings before moving into community or specialist roles. Adult nurses can specialise in fields such as critical care, oncology, mental health liaison, older people's care, infection control, and many more. Experienced nurses progress into leadership, management, advanced clinical practice, nurse consultancy, and education. Some pursue postgraduate study to develop specialist clinical or academic expertise.
