About this course

Adult nursing is the largest field of nursing in the UK, concerned with the care of people from the age of eighteen through to the end of life across the full range of acute, chronic, and complex health conditions. Adult nurses work in hospitals, community settings, care homes, hospices, and people's own homes, providing clinical care, health education, rehabilitation support, and end of life care. The role is both technically demanding and deeply relational, requiring strong clinical skills alongside the capacity to communicate sensitively with patients and families in situations that are often difficult and distressing. At the University of Chester, this three-year, full-time programme leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as an adult nurse. The programme includes a foundation year, designed for students who need additional academic preparation, and a year abroad, which gives you the opportunity to experience nursing in an international healthcare context and to see how different systems approach the challenges of adult care. The curriculum covers human anatomy and physiology, evidence-based practice, pharmacology, clinical assessment, long-term condition management, mental health awareness, and the legal and ethical frameworks governing nursing practice. Clinical placements are a required and substantial component throughout the programme, ensuring that academic knowledge and clinical competence develop together. Chester's placements are spread across NHS trusts, community providers, and independent sector organisations, giving you experience of the range of settings in which adult nurses work. Registered adult nurses work across all clinical specialties and settings within the NHS, in independent hospitals and care homes, and in community nursing. The profession is in sustained demand, and there are clear pathways into specialist practice, advanced clinical roles, leadership, and academic careers for those who wish to develop their expertise further after registration.
