About this course

The theatre you see from the audience is only half the picture. Behind every performance is a team of technical specialists whose expertise in lighting, sound, staging, set design and production management determines whether a production lives or dies. Technical Theatre at the University of Salford prepares you to work in those roles, combining creative sensibility with rigorous practical training across the full range of production disciplines. You will study stage management, lighting design, sound technology and visual technologies, learning both the principles that underpin each area and the hands-on craft of making them work in live performance. The degree develops your ability to read and interpret a director's vision, to collaborate under pressure, and to solve the logistical and technical problems that arise in every production. Safety, budgeting and project management are woven through the curriculum, because technical theatre is ultimately a professional discipline where attention to detail and reliability under pressure are as important as creative flair. The three-year full-time programme at Salford includes both a sandwich year and a work placement, which means you will spend significant time working in professional production environments before you graduate. This kind of industry experience is essential in the performing arts, where professional networks and demonstrated competence in real venues and productions are what open doors. You will build relationships with industry professionals and develop a practical portfolio that represents who you are as a technical practitioner. Graduates work across the full spectrum of live performance, from theatre and opera to large-scale events, television studios and immersive experiences. Roles include lighting designer, sound engineer, stage manager, production manager, technical director and set construction supervisor. The skills you develop are highly transferable into the events industry, television production and themed entertainment. For those who want to specialise further or move into teaching and training, postgraduate study in theatre production or arts management is a well-trodden path.
