MSci Sports and Exercise Science with Industrial Placement
About this course
Sports and Exercise Science is the application of scientific principles to the understanding of human physical performance and health. It draws on physiology, biomechanics, psychology, nutrition, and anatomy to explain how the body responds to exercise, how training improves performance, and how physical activity contributes to long-term health and wellbeing. The discipline bridges sport and medicine, basic science and applied practice, and its graduates work in settings ranging from elite sport performance to clinical exercise referral and public health. At the University of Aberdeen, this five-year full-time programme includes an industrial placement, giving you extended time in a professional setting before completing your final stages of study. A year abroad is also built into the programme, offering the opportunity to study exercise science in a different national and institutional context, which broadens both your academic perspective and your personal resilience. Over the course of your studies you will develop understanding of exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology, nutrition science, and research methods. You will learn to design and conduct scientific investigations, to analyse physiological and biomechanical data, and to apply evidence-based principles to the improvement of performance and health outcomes. Aberdeen's location in the north of Scotland provides access to a varied physical environment and to a university with a strong tradition in life sciences and health research. The programme's combination of academic rigour and extended professional experience is well suited to students who want not just to understand exercise science but to apply it in real contexts. Graduates pursue careers in strength and conditioning, sport performance analysis, exercise physiology support in clinical or sport settings, health promotion, sport development, and coaching. Some go on to postgraduate study or professional qualifications in physiotherapy, dietetics, or sports medicine. The industrial placement and year abroad make this programme a particularly effective preparation for professional practice.
