BA Sport Journalism (with Foundation Year)
About this course
Sport journalism sits at the intersection of two of the most dynamic fields in contemporary media, bringing together the craft and ethics of journalism with deep specialist knowledge of sport as a cultural, commercial, and social phenomenon. Sports journalism covers not only match reports and event coverage but investigative reporting on issues within sport, including doping, governance, financial misconduct, and the complex relationships between sport, race, gender, and politics. The sports media industry is also evolving rapidly: digital platforms, social media, podcasting, and data journalism are transforming how sports stories are found, told, and consumed. At Teesside University, this four-year full-time programme with a foundation year and a sandwich year with work placement provides a thorough foundation in both journalism skills and sports knowledge. The foundation year introduces you to the fundamentals of media, including image-making, video, audio, and digital production, alongside media theories, critical analysis, and audience perspectives. Across the main degree you develop the reporting, writing, broadcasting, and digital storytelling skills of a working sports journalist, alongside specialist knowledge of the sports industry, its institutions, and the editorial and ethical frameworks within which sports media operates. A work placement is embedded in the degree, giving you direct professional experience in sports media or journalism before graduation. Graduates work as sports journalists, reporters, broadcasters, and content producers for newspapers, magazines, websites, television and radio stations, sports federations, and digital media companies. The practical journalism skills developed by the degree also transfer into sports public relations, communications, and marketing roles, as well as broader media and communications careers. Many graduates build careers that combine sports journalism with other forms of media work, and the degree's strong practical orientation ensures that graduates are competitive in the job market from day one.
