BA Sports Journalism with Placement
About this course
Sports journalism is a specialism at the intersection of journalism and sport, one of the most widely consumed and commercially significant sectors of global media. Sports journalists report, analyse and tell the stories that connect fans to the athletes, clubs and events they care about, across newspapers, magazines, websites, television, radio, podcasting and social media. The specialism requires the same core journalistic skills as any other form of the profession, including news judgement, interviewing, writing under deadline, accuracy and ethical practice, alongside a deep knowledge of sport and its commercial and cultural dimensions. At the University of Gloucestershire, this four-year full-time programme includes a placement built into the degree, giving you direct experience in real sports media environments. You will have opportunities with Premier League, Women's Super League and EFL clubs including Wolves, Bristol City and Cheltenham Town, as well as rugby and county cricket teams, taking on roles in social media, videography and matchday reporting. These real-world experiences, developed alongside your academic study, build your portfolio and your professional contacts in the industry. The programme develops your writing, broadcasting, video production and digital media skills alongside your understanding of sports journalism as a profession. Graduates of sports journalism programmes go on to careers in print and digital journalism, television and radio sports coverage, social media management for sports organisations, sports broadcasting, content production, public relations and communications for clubs and governing bodies, and freelance sports writing. The skills developed also transfer into sports marketing, events management and broader communications roles. Further study in journalism, media or communications is available for those who want to pursue a specialist or academic path.
