About this course

Sports journalism is a specialism within journalism that covers one of the most popular and commercially significant areas of public life. It combines the core skills of reporting, interviewing, writing, and broadcast production with deep knowledge of sport, and in its multimedia form it extends across written, audio, video, and digital platforms that together constitute the modern sports media landscape. Sports journalists tell stories that matter to millions of people, covering the results, narratives, controversies, business, and human interest of sport across every level from grassroots to elite. The University of Northampton's three-year full-time multimedia sports journalism degree develops both the journalistic skills and the sports knowledge you need to work across these platforms. You will study news reporting, feature writing, broadcast journalism, podcast and video production, social media and digital storytelling, media law and ethics, and the business of sports media, alongside developing your understanding of sport across multiple disciplines and formats. The programme builds your portfolio of published and broadcast work, developing the practical skills and versatility that employers in sports media expect. Northampton's journalistic training is underpinned by a professional approach to accuracy, fairness, and public interest that applies as much to sports coverage as to any other field. Graduates from sports journalism programmes go on to work as reporters, producers, presenters, social media editors, and content creators for sports broadcasters, national and regional newspapers, sports websites, podcasting networks, and communications teams within sports organisations. Many freelance across multiple platforms. The skills in storytelling, research, and multimedia production the degree develops are also valued in PR, communications, and content roles beyond sport. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in journalism or media to develop their expertise further.
