BSc Sport Coaching
About this course
Sport coaching is both a science and a craft. It draws on exercise physiology, psychology, pedagogy, and performance analysis to understand how athletes and participants develop, how training should be structured to produce improvement, and how coaches can build the relationships and environments that help people reach their potential. Good coaching is about far more than technique: it is about understanding people, planning intelligently, and reflecting honestly on what is and is not working. At the University of Northampton, this three-year full-time degree develops the core skills of coaching, including planning and delivering training sessions, assessing participant needs, designing both short-term and long-term programmes, and reviewing their effectiveness. The degree is designed to be flexible: in your second and third years, you can specialise in areas that match your career ambitions, whether that is performance analysis, coaching children and young people, the psychology of coaching, or the relationship between coaching and physical education. This breadth of options means you can shape a degree that reflects your particular interests and the kind of coaching career you want to build. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points. Graduates of sport coaching programmes work across a wide range of settings. Club and elite sport coaching, school-based coaching and PE, community sports development, performance analysis, and talent identification are all natural destinations. Many graduates work across multiple sectors, combining roles in schools, clubs, and community organisations. Some go on to pursue postgraduate study in sport science, strength and conditioning, or sports psychology, deepening their specialism. Others develop careers in sports administration, development roles with national governing bodies, or international coaching positions. The degree provides both the practical competence and the academic understanding that coaching at all levels of the sport requires.
