BSc Sport and Exercise Science (includes foundation year)
About this course
Sport and exercise science is the scientific study of human physical performance and the role of exercise in health and wellbeing. It draws together physiology, biomechanics, and psychology to understand how the body responds to physical demands, how training and exercise improve fitness and performance, and how sport and physical activity contribute to mental and physical health throughout life. The discipline is both academically rigorous and practically orientated, preparing graduates for careers in sport, health, and related applied fields. At Aberystwyth University, this four-year full-time degree with integrated foundation year is taught by sport and exercise scientists with direct experience working with organisations, teams, and individuals across the full performance spectrum, from recreational athletes to European and world championship competitors. You will benefit from their applied expertise as you develop your own practical skills in Aberystwyth's dedicated sport and exercise laboratories, gaining hands-on experience with the physiological testing, biomechanical analysis, and psychological methods that practitioners use in the field. The foundation year gives you the academic preparation and subject grounding to move confidently into the honours degree, making the programme accessible to students who may not yet have the entry qualifications for direct entry. Throughout the degree you will build both theoretical understanding and the practical competencies to apply it, developing the research skills to evaluate and contribute to scientific knowledge in the field. Graduates go on to careers in sports coaching, strength and conditioning, exercise rehabilitation, sport development, health and fitness, performance analysis, and public health. Many pursue postgraduate study in physiotherapy, sport psychology, strength and conditioning, or research, using the scientific foundation of this degree to access specialist professional training. The combination of practical skills and academic rigour prepares graduates for careers across both elite sport and the broader health and wellness sector.
