BSc Security, Intelligence and Investigative Practice
About this course
Security, Intelligence and Investigative Practice is a field that has grown significantly in importance as the threats facing individuals, organisations and states have become more complex, more digital and more interconnected. It draws on criminology, law, intelligence studies, forensic investigation and risk management to develop the skills needed to gather and analyse information, manage security risks and conduct effective investigations in both public and private sector contexts. Practitioners in this field need both analytical rigour and practical investigative competence, as well as a sound understanding of the legal and ethical frameworks that govern how security and intelligence work is conducted. At the University of Cumbria this three-year full-time degree offers an industry-relevant curriculum with a strong emphasis on hands-on learning. You will develop skills in investigation techniques, surveillance, interview and communication, risk assessment and problem-solving, drawing on the real-world experience of academic staff who have worked in security and justice contexts. The programme prepares you for a field in which practical competence and the ability to apply knowledge in dynamic, real-world situations are as important as theoretical understanding. Graduates from Security, Intelligence and Investigative Practice degrees go on to a range of careers in the public and private sectors. Many find roles in policing, border force, the prison service, fraud investigation and financial crime units. Others work in private security, corporate risk management, insurance investigation, data protection and compliance. The investigative skills and analytical approach the degree develops are also valued in intelligence-related government roles, counter-terrorism work and roles within the criminal justice system. For those wishing to continue their studies, the degree provides a platform for postgraduate work in security studies, criminology, intelligence studies, law or related disciplines.
