BA Russian and Spanish
About this course
Russian and Spanish bring together two of the world's great languages, each with a civilisation behind it of extraordinary depth. Russian opens the door to one of the richest literary traditions in history, from Pushkin and Tolstoy to Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and Bulgakov, and to a culture and political history that has shaped the modern world profoundly. Spanish, as one of the most widely spoken languages on earth, gives access to literature and culture spanning five centuries and four continents, from Cervantes and Lorca in Spain to the extraordinary novelists and poets of Latin America, as well as to an increasingly important global language for business, diplomacy, and everyday life. At the University of Manchester, this four-year, full-time programme develops advanced proficiency in both languages alongside serious engagement with the cultures, literatures, and contemporary societies of Russian-speaking and Spanish-speaking worlds. You will study language at an intensive level, working to develop fluency, precision, and cultural confidence in both, while engaging analytically with texts from both traditions. Manchester's languages faculty is strong in both Russian and Spanish, and the programme benefits from a research-active environment that takes both areas seriously. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placement, typically involving time spent working or studying in a Russian-speaking or Spanish-speaking context before you complete your final year. This experience is central to developing the fluency and professional confidence that the programme aims to produce. Graduates work in diplomacy, international business, translation and interpreting, journalism, education, international organisations, the energy sector, and many other fields where Russian or Spanish fluency, or both, is a genuine professional asset. Postgraduate study in Russian, Hispanic, or area studies, as well as in translation, international relations, and law, is a natural next step for many graduates.
