BA French and Spanish
About this course
French and Spanish together offer a powerful pairing: two of the world's most widely spoken languages, each carrying a literary and cultural tradition of immense scope. French is the first or official language in more than 25 countries across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond, and its literary heritage runs from the medieval troubadours and Montaigne through Flaubert and Proust to the Francophone writers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Spanish extends across the Iberian peninsula and Latin America, encompassing Cervantes, Lorca, and Neruda alongside the explosive creativity of the boom generation and contemporary writers from every corner of the Spanish-speaking world. At Queen Mary University of London, this four-year, full-time programme gives you the opportunity to develop advanced competence in both languages while also studying their literatures, cultures, and histories in depth. Queen Mary has a strong modern languages department with particular strengths in cultural and postcolonial approaches to language and literature, and the London location gives you access to French and Spanish cultural institutions, communities, and events throughout your studies. You will read literary texts in the original, developing close analytical skills as well as linguistic fluency. Cultural history, film, and contemporary media supplement the literary curriculum, giving you a rounded picture of each tradition. A typical entry tariff of 136 UCAS points indicates the entry expectations for the programme. The dual language combination develops linguistic agility and the ability to think across cultural and national boundaries, which are capacities valued in a wide range of professional and international contexts. Graduates pursue careers in translation and interpreting, education, the cultural sector, journalism, international business, diplomacy, law, and the civil service. Proficiency in both French and Spanish is genuinely valuable to employers with European and Latin American interests. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in languages, translation, or area studies.
