BSc Real Estate with Foundation
About this course
Real Estate is the professional discipline concerned with the valuation, management, development, and investment in land and property. It is a field that combines commercial acumen, legal knowledge, analytical skill, and an understanding of urban planning and the built environment. Property markets are central to the economy: they determine where people can afford to live and work, how cities grow and change, and how capital is allocated across the real economy. Real estate professionals advise on the purchase, development, management, and disposal of all kinds of property, from commercial offices and retail units to residential developments and agricultural land, and their expertise underpins billions of pounds of decisions every year. At the University of Reading, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year that provides an accessible entry point for students who want a more gradual transition into the technical and commercial material of the main degree. Reading has one of the most respected real estate programmes in the UK, with long-standing connections to the property industry and a curriculum that is designed in close dialogue with professional practice. You will study property valuation, investment analysis, development finance, planning law, property management, and the economics of land and property markets. The programme is designed with the professional qualifications of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in view, and the content aligns with the competencies required for professional assessment. You will develop analytical, commercial, and interpersonal skills alongside the technical knowledge specific to the field, preparing you for client-facing professional roles from early in your career. Graduates pursue careers as chartered surveyors, property managers, real estate investors, development professionals, and advisers across a wide range of property sectors. Many go on to the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence after graduation. Some continue to postgraduate study in real estate, urban planning, or property investment.
