BSc Psychology with Sociology
About this course
Psychology and sociology together offer a particularly powerful lens on human behaviour and social life. Psychology focuses on the individual, exploring how people think, feel, perceive, and behave, and using experimental and statistical methods to understand the processes that underpin human experience. Sociology examines the social structures, institutions, and cultural forces that shape collective life, asking how inequality, identity, and social change are produced at the level of groups, communities, and societies. Studying both together means you can move between individual and structural explanations, which is an unusually complete analytical toolkit. This three-year full-time degree at Southampton Solent University, which holds BPS accreditation, combines the psychological study of individual behaviour with exploration of the cultural and political issues that shape collective experience. A foundation year at the start of the programme provides a supported entry route, giving you the academic skills and subject knowledge to succeed on the degree itself. You will develop your understanding of psychological theory and research methods alongside sociological perspectives on inequality, community, identity, and social institutions, building a genuinely interdisciplinary approach to understanding people and societies. Graduates of psychology and sociology programmes go on to careers in a wide range of human-centred professions. Social work, counselling (with further training), human resources, community development, public health, education, market research, and the voluntary sector are all common destinations. The BPS accreditation means the psychology component of this degree counts towards the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, an important step for those who wish to go on to qualify as a psychologist. Postgraduate study in psychology, sociology, social work, counselling, or public policy is a natural progression for those who want to specialise or develop a professional qualification.
