BSc Psychology
About this course
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour, exploring how people think, feel, perceive and act, how they develop over time, how social environments shape their choices and relationships, and how mental health and disorder arise and can be understood and treated. It is a discipline that combines rigorous scientific method with some of the most compelling questions about what it means to be human, making it one of the most popular and intellectually rich degree subjects in the UK and internationally. A well-taught psychology degree builds both conceptual knowledge and genuine research skills, producing graduates capable of contributing to the field as practitioners or researchers. At the University of Bristol this three-year, full-time BSc Psychology trains you in the theories, methods and practical applications of contemporary psychological science. The degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society, meaning it confers the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership that is the first step toward professional qualification in applied psychology. You will study across the major domains of the discipline, including cognitive psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, biological psychology and individual differences, alongside research methods and statistics that will allow you to design, conduct and evaluate psychological research. Bristol's strong research culture means your teaching is informed by current scientific work, and you will have opportunities to engage with research from early in the programme. Psychology graduates from a well-regarded institution are well positioned for further study and for a wide range of professional roles. Many continue to postgraduate study, including doctorate programmes in clinical, counselling, forensic or educational psychology, where they can work toward full professional qualification. Others enter careers directly in human resources, marketing research, user experience, health services, social work, education, research and the public sector. The scientific training and analytical skills a psychology degree provides are transferable across virtually any profession.
