About this course
Education with psychology is a combination that brings together the study of how people learn with the scientific understanding of how minds and behaviour work. Education as a discipline examines how learning is organised and supported in formal and informal settings, how curriculum and pedagogy are designed, and what social, cultural, and institutional factors shape educational experience and outcomes. Psychology provides the empirical and theoretical foundation for understanding the cognitive, developmental, motivational, and social processes that underlie learning and behaviour, giving you a scientific framework for thinking about what happens when people develop, grow, and acquire knowledge and skills. At the University of Bath, this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of both disciplines through a range of optional units that complement and enhance the knowledge and skills at the core of the degree. You will study educational theory and policy alongside psychological perspectives on development, motivation, learning, and individual difference, developing an integrative understanding of what effective education looks like and what evidence says about how to support it. The combination develops both academic rigour and the kind of applied insight that is valuable in careers oriented towards working with children, young people, and learners in a wide range of settings. Graduates of education with psychology programmes pursue careers in teaching, educational psychology, learning support, speech and language therapy, youth work, social care, and educational research. Teaching in schools and other educational settings is a common path, with many graduates going on to complete initial teacher training. The psychology component is valuable preparation for postgraduate training in educational psychology, which requires a psychology degree as a foundation. Other routes include roles in schools as support practitioners, in educational publishing, in curriculum development, and in policy roles within local and central government. Postgraduate study in education, psychology, or a related field is open to those who wish to specialise further.
