BSc Psychology
About this course
Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes, and it is one of the most fascinating and practically relevant disciplines available. It investigates how the brain gives rise to thought, perception, and emotion; how people develop from infancy through adulthood; how social contexts shape behaviour; and how psychological understanding can be applied to help people flourish and to address social and clinical challenges. The discipline is empirical, grounded in evidence from experiments, observations, and careful measurement, but its questions are deeply human. At the University of Bath this three-year, full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding across the discipline, covering biological, cognitive, developmental, and social psychology, with options including clinical and health psychology for students who want to develop a more applied orientation. You will study the core theories and research methods that define the field, building your ability to design and evaluate research, to think critically about evidence, and to apply psychological understanding to real-world questions. Bath is a leading research university and the psychology programme benefits from the expertise of an active research faculty. Graduates of psychology from Bath pursue a wide range of careers. The British Psychological Society accreditation provided by the degree gives the foundation for graduate basis for chartered membership, which is the required step for postgraduate training in clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, or occupational psychology. Many graduates enter the health and social care sector, working in NHS psychology services, counselling, mental health support, or research roles while they build the clinical hours needed for postgraduate training. Others move into human resources, marketing and consumer research, education, management consulting, and public policy, where the analytical and interpersonal skills psychology develops are valued. Further study at Masters or doctoral level is typically required for routes into professional qualification as a psychologist.
