MA Portuguese and Philosophy
About this course
Portuguese and Philosophy is a combination that pairs language and cultural immersion with some of the most enduring questions human beings have asked about knowledge, morality, existence, and reason. Portuguese is a global language spoken by over two hundred million people across Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique, Angola, and other countries, making it one of the world's most widely spoken tongues. Philosophy, meanwhile, is a discipline that sharpens your capacity for rigorous argument, conceptual analysis, and reflective thinking, skills that remain valuable whatever path you take after university. At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme develops genuine proficiency in Portuguese alongside a serious engagement with philosophical thought. Your language study will take you from building competence in grammar and spoken communication through to reading literary and non-literary texts in the original, engaging with the extraordinary richness of Brazilian and Lusophone African literatures alongside the European Portuguese tradition. Cultural and historical context is woven through the language curriculum, giving you an understanding of how Portuguese-speaking societies have been shaped by colonialism, migration, and political change. Your philosophy studies will introduce you to both analytic and continental traditions, covering areas such as metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, and epistemology. Edinburgh's philosophy department is one of the strongest in the UK, and you will be taught by researchers working at the forefront of their specialisms. The four-year duration is necessary to develop real depth in both subjects, and the structure allows you to progress from foundational work to advanced independent inquiry in each discipline. Graduates pursue careers in law, international relations, diplomacy, journalism, translation, business in Lusophone markets, and public policy. The analytical skills developed through philosophy are highly transferable, and postgraduate routes include law conversion, philosophy research, and international affairs.
