About this course
Philosophy is the oldest systematic discipline in the Western intellectual tradition, and it remains one of the most demanding and rewarding areas of study available at university. It trains you to think with exceptional clarity, to identify hidden assumptions, to construct and evaluate arguments, and to engage seriously with ideas that resist easy answers. The questions philosophy addresses, including questions about knowledge, reality, morality, mind, language, and justice, are not merely academic: they underlie every major intellectual and political controversy, and the ability to think philosophically is among the most transferable of all intellectual skills. This four-year full-time programme at the University of Edinburgh includes a year abroad, placing you in a different philosophical tradition or academic environment for a sustained period. Edinburgh is one of the great European centres of philosophical thought, with deep traditions in metaphysics, epistemology, the history of philosophy, and philosophy of mind, alongside strong work in ethics, political philosophy, and the philosophy of science. You will read primary texts from ancient, modern, and contemporary philosophy, attend seminars where ideas are debated closely, and develop your own philosophical writing through essays and longer independent projects. The year abroad adds an international dimension that broadens both your philosophical exposure and your personal development. Philosophy graduates are found in an exceptionally wide range of careers, because the skills the discipline develops are valued almost universally. Many work in law, finance, the civil service, journalism, technology policy, consulting, and academia. Employers frequently note that philosophy graduates are among the strongest analytical and written communicators they encounter. Postgraduate options include further study in philosophy, law, politics, economics, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence, and the programme provides a rigorous foundation for any of these routes.
