BA Politics, Philosophy and Economics
About this course
Politics, Philosophy and Economics, often known as PPE, is one of the most intellectually ambitious degree programmes available, bringing together three disciplines that together provide a comprehensive framework for understanding how human societies are organised, governed, and improved. Politics examines the exercise and contestation of power. Philosophy develops the capacity for rigorous analytical reasoning about fundamental questions of knowledge, ethics, and the nature of mind. Economics provides the scientific tools to understand how resources are allocated, how markets work, and how policy interventions shape behaviour and outcomes. At Royal Holloway, University of London, this three-year full-time programme gives you a common foundation across all three disciplines in the first year before allowing increasing flexibility in later years. You will write an advanced dissertation in your final year that develops connections across the three subjects, demonstrating the integrative thinking that PPE at its best produces. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placements, giving you professional and international experience that enriches your academic work and significantly strengthens your preparation for graduate employment. PPE graduates are among the most versatile and sought-after in the job market. Careers in politics, government, the civil service, economic consultancy, financial services, journalism, law, international organisations, and the charitable sector are all well-established destinations. The ability to analyse problems using the frameworks of all three disciplines, to reason rigorously, and to communicate complex ideas clearly makes PPE graduates effective in almost any environment where understanding and navigating complex systems matters. Postgraduate study in economics, politics, law, philosophy, or public policy is a natural route for those who wish to develop their expertise further.
