About this course

Philosophy is the discipline that examines the foundations of knowledge, ethics, logic, and the nature of reality and mind. It asks questions that other disciplines presuppose rather than investigate: what it means to know something, what makes actions right or wrong, what the relationship is between mind and world, and what principles should underpin the organisation of a just society. The study of philosophy is demanding precisely because it cannot rely on settled methods or fixed data; it requires sustained, precise thinking and the willingness to question what seems obvious. At the University of the West of England in Bristol, this three-year full-time philosophy degree takes a distinctively practical and interdisciplinary orientation. Rather than organising the curriculum around traditional historical periods, the programme focuses on applying philosophical theory to pressing real-world challenges across three core themes: health, society, and public ethics; technology, environment, and sustainability; and human flourishing and creative practice. This means you will engage with live debates in bioethics, environmental philosophy, philosophy of technology, and the ethics of AI, as well as with the canonical figures and arguments of the philosophical tradition. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, providing a breadth of professional and international experience unusual for a philosophy degree. The combination of philosophical rigour and applied focus at UWE prepares graduates for a wide range of careers in which ethical reasoning and critical thinking are directly relevant. Graduates go on to roles in health ethics, policy, technology, education, law, the civil service, and consulting, as well as into postgraduate study in philosophy or related disciplines.
