BA Philosophy
About this course
Philosophy is the discipline that examines the foundations of knowledge, value, and existence. It asks questions that other subjects take for granted: What can we know, and how? What makes actions right or wrong? What is consciousness, and what is its relationship to the brain? What is it for an argument to be valid? Do abstract objects such as numbers really exist? These are not merely academic puzzles: the ability to reason carefully, to identify hidden assumptions, and to construct and evaluate arguments is among the most transferable intellectual skills a degree can develop. This three-year full-time programme at Newcastle University includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, which is an unusually practical and internationally enriched structure for a philosophy degree. The sandwich and placement years give you the opportunity to apply your analytical skills in professional settings, demonstrating that philosophical training is directly relevant to a wide range of careers. The year abroad provides the chance to study philosophy in a different national academic tradition, which is itself a form of comparative philosophical education. With a typical tariff of 136 points, the programme attracts students who are genuinely engaged with philosophical questions and prepared for the rigorous argument-centred style of learning that the discipline requires. At Newcastle you will study the major branches of philosophy, including epistemology, ethics, philosophy of mind, metaphysics, logic, and political philosophy, developing the capacity to read difficult texts carefully, identify and evaluate arguments, and write with analytical clarity. These skills are consistently cited by employers as among the most valuable any graduate can bring to a role. Graduates from philosophy programmes work across an extraordinarily wide range of careers, including law, the civil service, consultancy, technology, finance, journalism, education, public affairs, and research. The placement year often provides a direct pathway into professional employment, and many employers actively seek philosophy graduates for roles that require clear thinking and careful communication. Postgraduate study in philosophy, law, or related fields is a well-established next step.
