BA Philosophy, Ethics and Religion with Year Abroad
About this course
Philosophy, ethics, and religion is a combination that explores some of the deepest and most enduring questions human beings have faced. Philosophy asks about the nature of reality, knowledge, reasoning, and value, using careful argument to test ideas that might otherwise be assumed without question. Ethics considers how we ought to live, what we owe each other, and how we should approach difficult moral decisions at both the personal and the political level. The study of religion examines the beliefs, practices, texts, and institutions of the world's religious traditions, asking both what they are and what they mean for individuals, communities, and societies. Together, the three disciplines develop a rich capacity for reflective thinking about the most fundamental questions of human life. At the University of Southampton, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in another country and to engage with philosophical and religious traditions in a different academic and cultural context. You will explore questions about knowledge, reality, how we should live, whether religious beliefs can be justified, and how philosophy can be applied to real-world problems such as global poverty and justice. The programme is designed to cultivate intellectual rigour, openness to alternative perspectives, and the ability to engage seriously with positions you may not initially share. You will develop strong skills in argument analysis, essay writing, close reading of philosophical and religious texts, and the construction of carefully reasoned positions. These are capacities with broad applicability, valued in law, public policy, education, journalism, and any role that requires clear and principled thinking. Graduates from philosophy, ethics, and religion programmes pursue careers in education, the civil service, law, healthcare ethics, journalism, the charity sector, faith organisations, and a wide range of other fields. Postgraduate study in philosophy, ethics, theology, religious studies, or law is a natural continuation for those who wish to pursue research or specialist professional roles.
