Philosophy is the discipline that examines the foundations of knowledge, value, and existence. It asks questions that other subjects take for granted: What can we know, and how? What makes actions right or wrong? What is consciousness, and what is its relationship to the brain? What is it for an argument to be valid? Do abstract objects such as numbers really exist? These are not merely academic puzzles: the ability to reason carefully, to identify hidden assumptions, and to construct and evaluate arguments is among the most transferable intellectual skills a degree can develop. This three-year full-time programme at Newcastle University includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, which is an unusually practical and internationally enriched structure for a philosophy degree.
