BA Philosophy
About this course
Philosophy is the discipline that examines the most fundamental questions human beings can ask: What is knowledge, and how do we justify our beliefs? What makes actions right or wrong? What is the nature of mind, consciousness, and personal identity? What are the foundations of logic, language, and meaning? These are not merely abstract puzzles; they underpin every field of human inquiry and touch on the deepest questions about how to live. At the University of Lincoln, the philosophy degree approaches these questions through both the canonical texts of the tradition and the work of contemporary philosophers. You will engage with Plato, Descartes, Nietzsche, Marx, and Wittgenstein alongside cutting-edge contemporary research in metaphysics, ethics, philosophy of mind, political philosophy, and epistemology. The programme runs over three years full-time and includes a sandwich year and a work placement, which provide professional experience that complements the theoretical depth of the degree. Philosophy at Lincoln is taught by researchers who are active in the field, meaning your education is connected to current philosophical debates rather than purely historical survey. You will develop skills in logical analysis, argumentation, close reading, and precise written communication, all of which are among the most transferable that higher education produces. The ability to identify assumptions, evaluate evidence, and construct rigorous arguments is valued in virtually every professional field. Philosophy graduates go into a remarkably wide range of careers, including law, the civil service, business, journalism, finance, education, public policy, and consulting. The degree is also one of the strongest preparations for postgraduate study, and many Lincoln philosophy graduates pursue master's programmes or doctoral research in philosophy and related disciplines.
