BA Philosophy
About this course
Philosophy is one of the world's oldest academic subjects, asking fundamental questions about the world and how we understand it. Does evil exist? Are we ever truly free to act? What does morality or justice require? How do we know what we know, if we can ever know anything at all? These are not merely abstract puzzles: they are questions that bear directly on how we live, how we organise society, and how we engage with each other. Studying philosophy at degree level develops the ability to think clearly, construct well-developed arguments, and defend them with precision and intellectual honesty, across the most challenging terrain of human thought. At the University of Leeds, this three-year full-time programme benefits from a distinctively student-centred and research-led approach, combining engagement with both the analytical and continental philosophical traditions in a way that is relatively unusual among UK philosophy departments. You will explore questions in ethics and moral philosophy, logic, metaphysics, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and the history of philosophy from ancient to contemporary thought. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placements are part of the programme, giving you direct professional experience in a range of applied contexts and an international dimension to your philosophical studies. With a typical entry tariff of 152 UCAS points, this is a competitive programme that prepares graduates for a remarkably wide range of careers. Philosophy graduates are valued by employers for their analytical rigour, written communication, and capacity to engage with complex and ambiguous problems. Careers span law, the civil service, journalism, finance, management consultancy, education, publishing, policy research, technology, and many other sectors. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, law, politics, or ethics, and some pursue academic careers in research and teaching.
