About this course

European philosophy and French is a combination that connects two of the continent's most significant intellectual traditions. Philosophy in its European continental mode, encompassing phenomenology, existentialism, structuralism, poststructuralism, critical theory, and the broader tradition from Descartes through Kant to Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and the French thinkers of the twentieth century, is one of the richest and most challenging bodies of thought in the Western tradition. French, as the language through which so much of this philosophy was written and debated, gives you direct access to primary texts and to the cultural milieu in which these ideas developed and circulated. At the University of Dundee, this four-year full-time programme takes you through the history and problems of European philosophy with a focus on the continental tradition, examining key thinkers and movements from the early modern period through to contemporary debates, while also developing your French language skills to a professional level. You will engage with texts in both translation and the original French, and the language component develops your capacity to read philosophical and literary texts in French directly, which is a significant advantage for serious study of the European tradition. A year abroad is incorporated into the programme, providing the opportunity to study at a French institution and immerse yourself in the language and intellectual culture of France. Graduates from European philosophy with French go on to careers in academia, education, cultural organisations, journalism, translation, the civil service, publishing, and a range of professional roles where analytical thinking and cultural breadth are valued. French language proficiency opens additional doors in diplomatic, commercial, and European institutional contexts. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, French studies, or European cultural history, and some move into academic research and teaching in philosophical or literary fields.
