BA Philosophy and English with Year Abroad
About this course
Philosophy and English is a pairing that examines two of the most fundamental human activities: reasoning and writing. Philosophy is the systematic attempt to arrive at clear, well-justified answers to profound questions about knowledge, reality, ethics, and human nature through rigorous argument. English develops close reading, interpretive sensitivity, and the ability to articulate complex ideas in precise and compelling prose. Together, they form a particularly productive combination, since the conceptual tools of philosophy deepen your engagement with literature, while the close reading and cultural awareness that English develops enriches your philosophical thinking. At the University of Southampton this four-year full-time programme, which includes a year abroad, offers you the chance to examine fundamental concepts from two complementary angles, building an understanding of each discipline that is enriched by the presence of the other. You will engage with the major traditions and problems of philosophy, including epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, and the philosophy of mind, alongside the study of English literature across periods, genres, and critical approaches. The year abroad extends your intellectual and personal horizons, allowing you to study at a partner institution in another country and to encounter both disciplines in a different cultural and academic context. Graduates from philosophy and English go on to careers in law, the civil service, journalism, publishing, education, academic research, broadcasting, management, and a wide range of other roles where the ability to reason carefully, read closely, and write with clarity is an advantage. The combination develops graduates with a rare ability to move between rigorous conceptual argument and sensitive cultural interpretation, which is valued in many demanding professional contexts. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, English, or law, pursuing specialist expertise or academic careers.
