About this course

Mental health nursing is one of the four fields of nursing practice in the UK, and it addresses some of the most complex and significant challenges in healthcare. Mental health nurses support people experiencing the full range of mental health difficulties, from anxiety and depression through to psychosis, personality disorders, and the psychiatric manifestations of physical illness. The work requires both clinical knowledge and the capacity for therapeutic relationships built on trust, empathy, and professional discipline. At Nottingham Trent University this three-year full-time programme leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a mental health nurse. You will study the theoretical and scientific foundations of mental health nursing, including anatomy and physiology, psychology, pharmacology, mental health law, and the evidence base for nursing interventions. Clinical placements are built into the degree throughout, placing you in a range of inpatient, community, and specialist mental health settings where you develop practical skills under the supervision of registered nurses. These placements increase in complexity and responsibility as you progress, so that you graduate ready to practise safely and confidently. The programme reflects current approaches to mental health care, including recovery-oriented practice, trauma-informed care, and the importance of working collaboratively with service users and their families. You will develop therapeutic communication skills alongside clinical competence. Graduates register as mental health nurses and work in NHS inpatient and community mental health services, CAMHS, forensic mental health, private sector mental health providers, and charitable organisations. Mental health nursing offers a challenging and rewarding career with strong employment prospects across the UK, and many nurses continue to postgraduate study or specialist practice development in areas such as psychological therapies or leadership.
