BA Norwegian and Spanish
About this course
Norwegian and Spanish represent two very different corners of Europe's linguistic map: Norwegian, a North Germanic language of Scandinavia with a relatively small speaker community but a disproportionately significant global presence through Norway's shipping, energy, and technology industries; and Spanish, one of the world's most widely spoken languages, covering over twenty countries across Europe, Latin America, and beyond. Studying both gives you a rare combination of Nordic and Ibero-American cultural access that is genuinely distinctive in the graduate labour market. At University College London, this four-year programme takes you to high proficiency in both languages while developing your critical engagement with the literatures, histories, and cultures of the regions where they are spoken. You will read literary and cultural texts in both languages, engage with film, press, and other media, and develop the historical and social knowledge to interpret those materials with analytical depth. UCL's Scandinavian and Hispanic Studies departments both have strong research profiles, and students benefit from being taught within a university with excellent library resources and close links to the cultural institutions of London. Graduates with expertise in Norwegian and Spanish are particularly well placed for careers in the energy sector, given Norway's central role in European oil and gas and its growing renewables industry, as well as in international business, diplomacy, journalism, translation and interpreting, and roles in organisations with Latin American or Spanish operations. The unusual combination is a genuine differentiator in competitive graduate markets. Postgraduate study in Scandinavian studies, Hispanic studies, European languages, or translation is a natural continuation for those seeking academic or specialist professional careers.
