BA Musical Theatre
About this course
Musical theatre is a form that brings together acting, singing, and dance into a unified performance tradition with its own distinct vocabulary, history, and demands. From the golden age of Broadway and the West End through to contemporary immersive and experimental work, musical theatre has always pushed at the boundaries of what live performance can do, telling stories through the integration of music and movement in ways that neither spoken drama nor concert performance can achieve alone. Studying it at degree level means mastering three distinct craft disciplines while also understanding the history and theory that give the form its context. At Edge Hill University, this three-year full-time BA immerses you in that history, culture, and the characters of musical theatre, developing your technique and helping you find your own style as a performer across all three disciplines. You will refine your vocal, physical, and dramatic skills through intensive practical work, while also building the analytical and historical understanding that distinguishes a trained artist from a talented amateur. The programme includes a sandwich year with a year abroad and work placement opportunities, giving you international performance experience and direct engagement with professional contexts that will strengthen your practice and your CV before you graduate. Entry typically requires around 120 UCAS tariff points. Graduates pursue careers as performers, choreographers, directors, and musical directors in theatre, television, and film. Others move into arts education, casting, arts management, and community arts facilitation. The discipline, versatility, and collaborative working skills that musical theatre training develops are also transferable into a wider range of creative industry roles.
